A realistic timeline for building a website in South Africa. From initial consultation to launch day, understand each phase and what affects the timeline.
Another common question we hear is: "How long will it take to build my website?" The answer varies based on the complexity of the project, but most websites take between 2-6 weeks from initial consultation to launch. In this guide, we break down the typical timeline and what happens at each stage.
Most professional web development projects follow a similar process, though the exact steps may vary depending on the developer and project requirements.
Phase 1: Discovery and planning (2-5 days)
This is where we learn about your business, goals, target audience, and specific requirements. We discuss the scope of the project, review examples of websites you like, and clarify what success looks like for your project. By the end of this phase, we have a clear understanding of what needs to be built and a detailed project brief.
Phase 2: Design (5-10 days)
Based on the discovery phase, we create a custom design for your website. This includes the visual layout, colour scheme, typography, and overall user experience. We typically present the design as a mockup or prototype so you can see exactly how the website will look before development begins. This phase usually includes one or two revision rounds based on your feedback.
Phase 3: Development (7-15 days)
Once the design is approved, we build the website using clean, modern code. This includes setting up the structure, implementing the design, adding content, creating forms, and integrating any required functionality. For more complex projects like online stores or custom applications, this phase takes longer.
Phase 4: Content and testing (3-5 days)
We add all your content (text, images, videos) to the website and test everything thoroughly. This includes checking that the website works on different devices (mobile, tablet, desktop), testing all forms and links, verifying that pages load quickly, and ensuring there are no bugs or errors.
Phase 5: Launch (1-2 days)
Once everything is tested and approved, we deploy the website to your domain and make it live. We also set up essential tools like Google Analytics and Search Console, and provide you with any training or documentation you need to manage the website going forward.
Landing pages: 1-2 weeks
A single-page website can be built relatively quickly, especially if you already have your content and images ready. The main time factors are the design revision process and how quickly you can provide feedback.
Portfolio websites: 2-3 weeks
These typically include 4-5 pages and require time to showcase your work effectively. The timeline depends on how many projects you want to feature and whether you need help with content creation.
Business websites: 3-4 weeks
A standard business website with 5-7 pages usually takes about a month. This allows time for proper design, development, content integration, and testing. If you need custom features like booking systems or complex forms, add an extra week.
Online stores: 4-6 weeks
E-commerce websites take longer because of the additional functionality required: product catalogues, shopping carts, payment gateway integration, order management, and customer accounts. The timeline also depends on how many products you need to upload initially.
Custom web applications: 6+ weeks
Projects with custom functionality like dashboards, portals, or booking systems require more planning and development time. These projects are scoped individually based on the specific requirements.
Several factors can extend the timeline beyond the initial estimate:
Slow feedback or approvals
The development process requires your input at several stages. If feedback on designs or content takes weeks to come back, the project timeline extends accordingly. Clear communication and timely responses keep projects on track.
Content not ready
If you do not have your text, images, or other content prepared, we either need to wait for it or help you create it. Content creation (copywriting, photography, video production) adds time to the project.
Scope changes
Adding new features or pages after the project has started requires additional time. It is better to identify all requirements during the discovery phase to avoid delays later.
Complex integrations
Connecting your website to external systems (CRM, booking platforms, custom APIs) can take longer than expected, especially if the third-party systems have complex requirements or poor documentation.
Revision rounds
Most projects include 1-2 revision rounds for design. If you request significant changes after approval, or go through multiple revision cycles, the timeline extends.
Prepare your content in advance
Have your text, images, logo, and any other content ready before the project starts. This allows us to integrate everything during development rather than waiting for content later.
Provide timely feedback
When we send you designs or ask for input, respond as quickly as possible. Even a quick acknowledgment that you have received the information and will review it helps us plan the timeline.
Be clear about requirements
The more specific you can be about what you want at the start, the fewer surprises there will be during the project. Take time during the discovery phase to think through all your requirements.
Trust the process
Each phase of the project exists for a reason. Skipping steps or rushing through design and planning often leads to problems later that take more time to fix.
Once your website is live, most developers provide a support period (typically 14-30 days) where they fix any bugs or issues that arise. After that, you may want to consider a maintenance plan for ongoing updates, security patches, backups, and technical support.
